When Miroslav Tichý (1926 - 2011) was first presented to the general public by Harald Szeemann at the Seville Biennial in 2004, the art world had a new star in its firmament. Tichy was a painter, photographer and ascetic with a convincing power of invention and expanded the boundaries of photography by an equally strange and enchanting chapter: After training as a painter, he spent years obsessively and secretly photographing the women of his home town. During the darkest period of Czechoslovak socialism, he succeeded in celebrating the beauty of women in the province of South Moravia in a body of work of singular importance. This publication uses previously unpublished images and documents to critically reflect on the career of this great artistic personality and scrutinise the myths of his existence.
