Raymond Depardon's first book for Éditions Arfuyen, Notes, was unique in that it was the result of a meeting of two very different worlds: poetry publishing and the world of photo reportage.
The joint project was to invent a new form, one that would break away from the unbearable style of the full-page glossy photo albums that were all the rage at the time. It was a great success.
Notes was published in 1979. In agreement with Depardon, we decided to try the experiment again.
"In the space of a very short time / we think of images / suddenly, without knowing why / the thought escapes / what remains is the light" (Hivers)
The photographs published here were taken during reports in China and France, and during a trip to Poland.
This book was designed and prepared by Philippe Delarbre and Gérard Pfister for Éditions Arfuyen. Agnès Sire, for Magnum Photos, supervised its preparation.
