Published by Kawade Shobo Shinsa in 2012, Nobuyoshi Araki’s Ai no Balcony captures the photographer’s life set against the backdrop of his balcony. The images delicately portray the early years of his life lived alongside his wife Yoko and his days after her death. Images which picture moments spent within their private sanctuary of their balcony nestled above the busy streets of Tokyo to photographs of their cat Chiro all present a beautiful depiction of a realm, edenic in its symbolic nature to a life before the presence of death. The black and white images narrate a journey through a private paradise of love shared by the three and the proceeding state of absence symbolized through Araki’s balcony; a field of love, memory and loss.
