Yoko Ikeda has an extraordinary ability to see beauty in seemingly banal objects and elevate them to the status of precious subjects. Ikeda plays with the shadows, colors, lines and textures she encounters as she moves about and observes everyday life.
Using her camera, she creates her own way of seeing and showing an outside world that we don't necessarily see at first glance. In Ikeda's compositions, there is often no point of reference. Space is flattened and abstracted, place is ambiguous. She experiments with unusual points of view and focus. Ikeda seeks contrasts of form and light, and uses unexpected framing.
The book pays homage to this abundant work with a sequence of multiple associations that could be described as musical, giving the book its title “Counterpoint”.
