‘1984 m’ was born out of the observation that video cameras are ubiquitous
in urban spaces. The series questions our relationship with
video surveillance, also known as security cameras, and the
concerns it raises. I decided on a specific protocol. I
started at the police headquarters at 36 quai des Orfèvres and walked to the
Senate, a distance of 1984 metres. I counted 104 cameras along the way,
each of which was capable of filming
citizens passing by. Through close-up shots
that show the cameras in their urban context, and
post-production work, I turn them into ‘surreal’ and
oppressive objects in an otherwise ordinary environment. This project was inspired by the collaborative website sous-surveillance (https://www.sous-
surveillance.net/), which allows users to report cameras on public roads
on an online map.
