''I kept my birthday presents from 1980 onwards and have maintained this ritual for fourteen consecutive years. In other words, during two septennates. François Mitterrand created the Musée du Septennat in 1986 to display all the gifts he received during his two terms as President of the Republic (1981-1995). That's fourteen years. With my year's head start, I thought of calling this book Lui aussi. But given his position, and the number of gifts we each received - around 318 from me, and around 4,700 objects and 18,000 books from him - I reversed the order. All the gifts I received are represented in this book. The choice of gifts photographed is not linked to their symbolic importance, nor to criteria of value, nor to François Mitterrand's preferences: it is a personal selection."
