In Leviathan, Paul Auster thanks Sophie Calle for allowing him to mix reality with fiction. Between pages 84 and 93 of his story, he uses certain episodes from his life to create a fictional character called Maria, who then leaves the artist to follow her own story.
Seduced by this double, Sophie Calle decided to play with Paul Auster's novel, mixing reality and fiction in her own way.
In Leviathan, Maria undergoes the same rituals as the artist. But Paul Auster has slipped his own rules of the game into the portrait of his character. In order to get closer to Maria, Sophie Calle has decided to obey the book. The author imposes on her creature a chromatic diet consisting of food of a single colour per day.
