In Underground Generation, Kenji Kanesaka brought together the work of various photographers, artists and perfor-mers working in the Tökyõ district of Shinjuku.
At the time, Kanesaka's artistic output was mainly that of a "video artist" (to use today's terminology), but he also worked hard to introduce hippie culture to Japan, particularly in its spiritual and political aspects. This volume is in keeping with his ambitions, as Kanesaka created a pastiche of the Japanese art world:
This ungura - short for "underground" - could exist thanks to the dynamism of the cultural movement embodied by young people.
