This project is a unique, one-of-a-kind handmade book.
I repurpose thick-paged children’s books, layering them with paint, collage, and encaustic wax as the final surface. The subject of this book is a fictional assessment of my hometown. I have a conflicted, often fraught relationship with the place I grew up, and I’m using this book to reconcile painful and challenging memories from my time there. I incorporate found vernacular photographs—not my own—distress them by hand, and create fictional narratives around each character or situation portrayed. In essence, I am constructing a new version of my memories, a new personal history, through this project.
