"The Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, and its director, Mitchell A. Wilder, had built up a unique collection of photographs depicting the West in the 19th and 20th centuries. After seeing a portrait of Wilbur Powell, a ranch foreman, which was part of a series of photographs taken on 4 July 1978 in Ennis, Montana, Wilder suggested that I continue this work under the auspices of the museum. For five summers, I would work on an exhibition that was to open at the Amon Carter Museum in the autumn of 1985. Thereafter, the original negatives and a series of prints would remain permanently in the museum's archives. When Wilder died in April 1979, the museum staff continued to support my project."
